Healthier Chocolate Sauce

I am constantly trying to get healthy, nutritious ingredients – including fat – into my son, this is a traditional fave which I am morphing into a healthier chocolate sauce! It’s delicious, dark, shiny and slightly decedent maybe – but very easy to make and allergen free. The next step towards health will be to replace the golden syrup with an unrefined natural sweetener – but I am adjusting it little by little.

The original version of this chocolate sauce was created when I was 14, and I made it to smother vanilla ice-cream on Friday nights when I had the living room to myself for a couple of hours; a rare occurrence in our household of 6.  I still love it on Vanilla Almond Dream (a dairy-free) ice-cream with toasted slivers of almonds on top, if ever I am in need of comfort food and an escape into the gorgeous world of Mr Darcey and the BBC series of Pride and Prejudice!

Anyhoooooo… now I rarely get a look in! Aars loves it, he calls it my “amazing chocolate sauce” 🙂 (I love how kids think their mums are awesome cooks). He enjoys it every morning on the crepes we make. It is a pretty cool start to the school day. Compared to the chocolate sauces available in the shops with allergens in, this is inexpensive, full of great nutrients and very, very rich & chocolatey. It’s also really easy and quick to make. I make a batch and then store it in an airtight container in the fridge. It gets gobbled up pretty quick!

Healthier Chocolate Sauce – Ingredients

coconut oil, golden syrup, sugar, raw cacao powder, milk alternative of your choice (I used oat milk)

Healthier Chocolate Sauce – Process

  • In a heavy based pan add:
    • ¼ C coconut oil
    • ¾ C golden syrup
    • ½ C raw cacao powder
  • Place on a low flame and stir
    • 2 Tbs milk alternative of your choice (I used oat milk)
  • Continue to stir until everything is melted
  • Allow to heat to the point where the sauce starts to bubble up, stirring all the time
  • Take off the heat

It is über hot at this point so I always let it cool for about 5 mins before using it.
