The season of indulgence is nearly upon us, so I thought I’d share a delicious and nutritious christmas spiced smoothie for a lovely little healthy treat! I love this smoothie because it is full of great-for-me ingredients, it’s not too heavy and is rich in my favourite christmassy spices: cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg – so it feels and tastes indulgent.
It’s really easy as the Christmas festivities and prep ramp up, to live off coffee, chocolates, sweet treats and fast food as we try to stuff all the christmas prep and events into our already busy worlds like crazed creatures on speed.
Taking the time to make ourselves fresh food and drink is hard. But I find it helpful. Not just for my bod, but for my mind too. It requires a change of pace. I have found myself putting on chill tunes in the kitchen and escaping from the seasonal chaos whilst I prepare fresh food and drink.
Making a smoothie means I have to stop, slow down and give myself some space to enjoy this scrummy spiced drink. It’s not a grab and guzzle whilst on the run experience! But unlike when I resort to caffeine and sweet carbs, I don’t get that temporary high followed by a crippling crash, my body doesn’t feel sluggish afterwards, it feels nurtured and cared for.
The bee pollen in this recipe is a super food, rammed full of ingredients and a little goes a long way. You can’t taste it in this smoothie which is a great thing, but you get all the delicious benefits of it. If you want to give it a go you can buy it online from amazon here! If you are not keen on the spices I love, and prefer others like cloves adapt this recipe to suit your taste-buds.
I often pop the m!lk alternative, dates, gluten-free oats and spices into a sealed jar to soak in the fridge before I head out. I know that when I get home it will be waiting for me, motivating me to make that tiny bit of extra effort to add the rest of the ingredients into the liquidiser and blitz.
Grating oodles of fresh nutmeg over the top is my favourite thing. They say that nutmeg is a relaxant so we need it in abundance at this time of year when life can get pretty stressful.
